A small, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America. It thrives in wetlands, along streams, and in moist lowlands. Leaves are dark green, finely serrated, and turn yellow in fall. It produces catkins in early spring before leaf-out, with woody cone-like fruits persisting through winter.
